[Lesson 5] The Result of Those Who Have Kept the Covenant and Those Who Have Not / Dt 28
Understanding Covenants in the Bible
To grasp the outcomes associated with keeping or breaking the covenant, we must first understand the different types of covenants found in the Bible. The Bible is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament, representing the old and new covenants, respectively.
The Old Covenant
The Old Testament, or Old Covenant, consists of the laws and agreements God made with the Israelites. These include the Ten Commandments and other laws given through Moses. Deuteronomy chapter 28 outlines the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience to this covenant.
The New Covenant
The New Testament, or New Covenant, is established through Jesus Christ. Jeremiah chapter 31 prophesies this new covenant, which is reiterated in Hebrews chapter 8. This covenant is written on the hearts of believers and involves a direct relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Importance of the New Covenant Today
For believers today, the crucial covenant to understand and keep is the New Covenant. This is highlighted in the Book of Revelation, particularly in chapter 7, which describes the sealing of God's servants.
Key Aspects of the New Covenant:
- Jesus as the Mediator: Hebrews 8:6 emphasizes that Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant, established on better promises.
- Internalization of God's Laws: Jeremiah 31:33-34 speaks of God's laws being written on our hearts, signifying an internal and personal relationship with God.
- Eternal Life: The New Covenant promises eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
Consequences of Keeping or Breaking the Covenant
The Bible clearly delineates the results of adherence or non-adherence to God's covenants:
- Keeping the Covenant: Those who keep God's covenant experience blessings, protection, and eternal life. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 outlines the blessings of obedience, while Revelation 7 describes the reward of being sealed by God.
- Breaking the Covenant: Conversely, breaking the covenant leads to curses, suffering, and separation from God, as detailed in Deuteronomy 28:15-68.
Conclusion
Our relationship with the covenant determines our spiritual outcomes. By understanding and keeping the New Covenant, believers align themselves with God's will and secure the blessings and eternal life promised in the scriptures. Let us commit to studying these covenants deeply and living according to the promises and commands God has given us.
Thank you for your attention and participation in this seminar. May we all seek to understand and keep the covenant, drawing closer to God and fulfilling His will in our lives.
Deuteronomy chapter 28. This chapter, recorded by Moses approximately 3,500 years ago, provides profound insights into the covenant between God and His chosen people. Moses, a fourth-generation descendant of Jacob and a member of the tribe of Levi, documented these divine instructions and the consequences of either adhering to or breaking God's covenant.
Deuteronomy Chapter 28: An Overview
The theme of today's discussion is the outcomes for those who keep the covenant and those who do not. Deuteronomy chapter 28 vividly describes the blessings bestowed upon those who obey God's commandments and the curses that befall those who do not. This chapter can be divided into two main sections:
- Verses 1-14: The blessings for obedience.
- Verses 15-68: The curses for disobedience.
The Results of Keeping the Covenant (Verses 1-14)
Key Points:
Exaltation Among Nations (Verses 1-2):
- If the chosen people obey God's words and follow His commands diligently, they will be set high above all nations on the earth. All these blessings will come upon them and accompany them if they obey the Lord their God.
Blessings in Every Sphere of Life (Verses 3-6):
- They will be blessed in the city and in the country, in the fruit of their womb, the crops of their land, the young of their livestock, and their herds and flocks. Their basket and kneading trough will be blessed. They will be blessed when they come in and when they go out.
Victory Over Enemies (Verse 7):
- The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against the chosen people will be defeated before them. They will come at the chosen people from one direction but flee in seven.
Abundant Prosperity (Verses 8-13):
- The Lord will send a blessing on the chosen people's barns and on everything they put their hand to. The Lord will bless them in the land He is giving them. They will lend to many nations but borrow from none. They will be the head, not the tail, if they pay attention to the commands of the Lord and carefully follow them.
